Not Science Fiction: The power to change brains.

Mines the cognitive science research that proves our brains are changed when we interact with our environment, pointing to the power we possess to alter our brains and those around us.

Notes that some claim the internet damages our brain by changing it toward the superficial, but they err in suggesting using the web is bad and in neglecting the fact that everything changes our brains.

Seth Godin's new book addresses the fact that all of our connections and interactions with other people change the the whole group, suggesting that we should become conscious of how significant our engagements with people are.

The hope is that we will understand our responsibility and power so that we have the bravery to take smart risks that help us learn to behave in powerful,  innovative ways, committing ourselves to manage our engagements with others using respect, kindness, and empathy. The end result will be success for all.

Darin's take:  This is a must read article on issues in brain and management that are rarely addressed, and almost never understood. The implications of the knowledge that all interactions physically change our brains by altering our neural pathways are shocking.

Contrary to the traditional conception of the brain as frozen after the late teenage years, current cognitive science proves that the brain has plasticity, meaning that it changes and adapts constantly.

This suggests that how we decide to spend our time alters our physical brain, and the change is never neutral, I contend. We either change our brains in a positive or negative direction. This empowers us as people to control and change ourselves for the better by influencing others in a positive direction.

My appeal to all is the same as the author's, that we collectively change our brains to help all people work better - more efficient, collaborative, empathetic, and nurturing. This vision changes the world if people just read about it because these words change brains in in a positive direction.
