Language represents a mystery of the mind that has been explored for ages, with an exponentially increasing complexity. Think of all that must take place for you to read and understand this sentence alone.  And in most cases, the communication is almost instantaneous, an astounding feet of computing power. Enjoyed your informative vlog, Darin. Chomsky's ground-breaking theories on linguistics highlights not only the complexity and plasticity of the human brain, but also its fragility. A tumor, stroke, or head injury affecting Wernicke's or Broca's areas will wipe out language comprehension or expression (respectively) in one fell swoop. It's hard to imagine language being meaningless, but for people with these lesions, it is. You can see the frustration in their eyes because they either can't find the words or can't understand yours. By elucidating redundant neural pathways or short-circuiting existing ones, perhaps science will enable these individuals to fully overcome their language deficits.

Helena,

This is fascinating as I have studied injuries to the Wernicke's/Broca's areas from the perspective of linguistics. So much has been learned through these tragedies because we didn't know where language "happened" until we could see the results of injuries. Much of early linguistics and cognitive science has a foundation upon brave individuals who suffered injury and stroke. We should all be grateful to them for lending their suffering to the causes of science and medicine.

Thanks again,

Darin
