Picture: New Google Search Page Design
Google Search moves towards consistency across devices
"New Design on Google Search Results Pages"
"In an attempt to create a consistent search experience across the wide variety of devices and screen sizes used today, Google changed the design of its main search results page, making it cleaner, simpler and with a bit more breathing room."

Mines the new look and layout of the Google Search page, pointing to its failure to optimize the white space to the left of the screen and the minimal redundancy between the black top bar and the categories listed below the search box.
Notes that the appearance is cleaner, with less clutter, but that the new design comes at the expense of usability. Points to the example of filtering images by size that has been left out of the new page. While consistency is achieved with mobile devices and tablets, desktop users may be disappointed in reduced functionality.
