Record Shares of Young Adults Have Finished Both High School and College
Record shares of young adults are completing high school, going to college and finishing college, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of newly available census data.

Mines the current research indicating that more students than ever are attending college and completing bachelor's degrees.

Notes that one in three of 25 -29 year olds attaining college degrees defies earlier predictions which anticipated the immigrant influx deflating the numbers considerably due to a disruption in racial and ethnic demographics.

Despite these underestimates, 90% of that same age group hold high school diplomas, a remarkably high number. Researchers suspect that the Great Recession in 2007-2009 may account for part of the increase, with a tepid job market, many youth foresaw the need of education for employment.

In addition, perceptions of the value of college education are shifting in the modern, highly technical marketplace, a trend noted by student and parent alike. Nearly 75% of American adults claimed that a college education is necessary for a secure future.

Whatever the cause, the change is a positive sign that Americans are recognizing the value of college, and the ease of attending either online or traditional classrooms becomes easier daily.

While it is nice to see more young adults getting higher education, I think that this data can be viewed as a negative just as much as a positive. If you consider the rising costs of education in America and the fact that there is a scarcity of jobs available for college graduates, you might argue that people are having to dive deeper into debt just to remain competitive in what is becoming a crowded workforce.

While seeing people educated is a good thing, is the devaluation of said education (a college degree today is worth as much as a high school diploma of a couple generations ago) along with increasing costs really such a great thing?

Its truly amazing how the stats and the 'people that know' always undervalued higher education. The problem with college and getting a degree, is that quite a few people turn their back on their profession after getting their degree and never use the diploma. Its a sad thing, but I've seen it a few times myself.

What is truly a shame is the cost of that education. And how many people that take out loans to do it, instead of looking for grants or scholarships to help.
