The Value of Higher Education is More Than Getting a Job
Lost amid the strident voices for higher education accountability and lower costs is the very real fact that we are on a dangerous trajectory that is potentially robbing our students of one of the most important aspects of the college experience – the development of intellectualism.

College is about your brain, not your job.
Mines the inherent value of education in developing and training the brain, making college more than just a jumping through academic hoops.

Notes that our intensely interconnected electronic global environment changes occur each instant, and if one attends college only for a career or vocation, the training they receive will likely be outdated by the time they reach the workforce.

Higher education needs to create lifelong, adaptive, self-motivated learners who can adapt quickly to learn new skills and technologies. This means that students must receive training outside their discipline.

Among the interdisciplinary skills that students need are:
  • A curious mind
  • A self-motivated learning ethic
  • Virtual communication skills
  • An ability to evolve in all aspects
  • A mind that critically analyses
  • The power to think across academic subjects

Most of these skills are frequently polished outside one's discipline area, and we should view general education classes as some of the most important ones students take.
