Blinking gives your brain a mini-nap: study
While blinking every few seconds serves to keep your eyes lubricated, scientists have spotted another benefit: blinking gives your brain a mini-power nap.

Blinking rests your brain.
Mines the brain's purpose in blinking, beyond moisturizing and cleaning the eyes, in order to better understand how the brain rests.

Notes the neuroscientific research out of the Osaka University, Japan: 20 young people, who watched a television program while their brain activity was monitored by an fMRI.

Scientists noted a distinct relaxation of the brain's visual, attention, and sensory areas, during blinks. The blinks induced a brief sleep-like state.

To contrast the data, the scientists conducted the same experiment, but with 165 millisecond sections of dead air inserted randomly. They noted a slow down in mental state during the gaps, but the reaction did not include the shut down of segments of the brain as with the blinking

Blinking induces a brief sleep like state that rests the brain in a unique way.

It would seem the results point to the brain turning off much of your vision during a blink. This makes sense because we are not interested in knowing the details of the insides of our eyelids, and focusing on a blink could actually prove distracting. This, however, is nothing like a "sleep-like" state if you ask me. In sleep, the EEG waveforms of our brains change through progressive stages. fMRI would offer no insight into this. Interestingly, there is actually a difference in waveforms between just having your eyes open and closing them. It would be interesting to see if these hold up even during the short period of a blink.

Me too! and now I'm thinking who gets so much time to do such studies?
By the way, good sharing.

Very impressive blog, I got the things which I never heard before. Keep on posting.

Do you provide more examples which shows that blinks induced a brief sleep-like state.
