Facebook Profile May Expose Mental Illness
A person's Facebook profile may reveal signs of mental illness that might not necessarily emerge in a session with a psychiatrist, a new study suggests.

Facebook activity psychologically revealing.
Mines the data of 200 volunteer college Facebook users to determine whether they are more candid online than they might be with a psychologist or researcher.

Notes that social sharing provided more open responses than researchers could elicit from questionnaires or face to face interactions, which introduce additional variables involving memory and honesty.

The participants expressed themselves more naturally and were less guarded about their psychological state when interacting on Facebook, and psychologists were able to detect illnesses such as paranoia.

The data could potentially be useful in constructing diagnostic materials and intervention methods to help individuals with mental illness.

The article did not discuss potential ethical concerns with the applications of the collection and data.
