... Book reviewers, whether for traditional book review columns or book blogs, frequently don’t accept submissions from self-published authors. Instead, there’s a web of professional relationships between traditional publishers and reviewers which keeps the books and the reviews flowing.

New York Times breaks tradition.
Mines the popular impetus behind indie publishing, which has pushed self-published books into the spotlight, forcing major reviewers like Time Magazine, The New Yorker, USA Today, and The Huffington Post , in addition to The New York Times, to take notice.
Notes that many who publish, especially indie authors, lack the funds to send books out for review,  and even when they are able to ship them off, the likelihood that the books will be reviewed is small. The system of reviewing books is imperfect, and authors need a new model to meet their needs, a large task. Until that happens, Sepinwall is one of the lucky few, among the first indie authors to be reviewed by the Times.
