Social Media we love to hate.
Relishing in the ecstasy of Obama's recent victory over the other guy, I stumbled upon a cosmic truth, in the wee hours of the cold Rexburg, Idaho morning. Regardless of the election, what the night really proved is the reason why we hate Facebook. And, we love it.
The back and forth bickering between close friends and family, torn apart by politics and religion brought out the worst in most of us election night. My younger brother and I cannot yet speak. The poor fellow is a Mormon, Republican, and in the smoke of battle, we raised painful memories from ancient childhood - secrets pinky sworn never to reveal. We slung mud and manure via social media.
This is the essence of family and friendship. We hate those terds to whom we are so closely bound, and we despise the fact that we must love them. The cosmic truth that you probably already discovered is that Facebook sucks because it connects us with family and friends, the very same people we want to steer clear of.
We might define Facebook as the social network that reconnects us with people we would rather disconnect from. And then like idiots, we discuss religion and politics.
In the end, Facebook will succeed for the same reason families do, we can't get the hell away. I have nightmares of those demon-blue thumbs-up symbols.
