The courage of Ellen DeGeneres
Before her fame, Ellen Degeneres was bashful and afraid of public speaking. Can you believe that?
Then, as a young woman, she found herself in front of a terrifying public crowd at a speaking event. She had stage fright. Ellen found courage by using humor to get her through the nerves. She was a tremendous success. Her mother motivated her to pursue comedy, and she started publicly in 1981.
The positive changes DeGeneres has accomplished since then is unprecedented, in the face of adversity and controversy. The quality I value most about her humor is her positive view of the world, in venues when being negative would have been easy:
The world is full of a lot of fear and a lot of negativity, and a lot of judgment. I just think people need to start shifting into joy and happiness. As corny as it sounds, we need to make a shift.
Ellen uses her power to resist and change the thinking of the masses on many issues. As citizens of the world we have the power to make a positive shift, creating happier people.
The positive, powerful force of a blogger's voice
While you may be thinking that your voice does not have the power of Ellen Degeneres, remember she was not always so powerful. You are a strong voice, rising high in the sea of bloggers, and you have as much potential as any famous influencer to succeed.
You must ask yourself what you will do with the power you have, as it becomes increasingly important the more you gain.
With all of the negativity in the world, you have the unique opportunity to be a voice for empathy, kindness, and compassion. Anyone with the courage to blog has this potential.
Raise the tide of positivity in the world, using your power to craft words into powerful statements about life and meaning. Negativity permeates our culture, and your positivity clashes in a war to elevate humanity.
Positivity is an act of revolt in our negative culture
Bloggers spin out a lot of crap along with moments of great prose, but whatever your topic area, you have the choice to be positive or negative.
What exactly does being a positive dissident mean? Many things:
Dissent is the responsibility of all citizens
Our challenge as bloggers is to look beyond the consensus to find the truth that elevates all humanity. We must stand above the sheep to be virtuous leaders. Brilliant writers have stated as much:
Writing the truth of the universe is the bloggers greatest challenge
One might contend that resistance is bad because it destroys and creates contention. The opposite is true. Galileo voiced the truth of the heliocentric universe in the 1500s, causing contention and murderous crowds to squelch the truth they found painful.
Truth never comes easy because it combats the ignorant public, writing the peaceful tool that resists the weapons of violence.
Galileo was correct, the earth revolves around the sun. Sometimes bloggers have a lonely path to follow as the voice of truth. Some truths only become clear to the public after they have become elements of history.
The courage to shout the truth in face of violent opposition is one of the noblest traits in humans.
As a power blogger, set your sights on truth, kindness, and elevating the masses.
Nellie Bly is an exemplar of the resistance I describe. In 1887, she entered the Blackwell Island Asylum, the corner that New York's mentally ill were swept into. For her first assignment as The New York World reporter, she posed as an insane women. She endured and exposed the awful conditions of the asylum, creating changes in the way the mentally ill were treated and changes in journalism.
Resistance of this kind requires confidence and courage. And you too are capable of it!
