"For the first time in human evolution, the individual life is long enough, and the cultural transformation swift enough, that the individual mind is now a constituent player in the global transformation of human culture."
I chuckle with the rest of the family when we rewatch the Sci Fi shows that I watched as a child. So much of Star Trek The Original Series, for example has either become ridiculous or reality. The real world has out-paced science fiction.
The Digital Cyborg Blogger
I argue here that our abilities are so intensely augmented by the digital world that we are cyborgs, especially bloggers who are harnessed to their sophisticated electronics. With with complex word processing software, live links to the internet, and real time reporting of events via social media, bloggers are key cyborgs with the power to alter the future.
Think with me for a moment. Remember back as far as you can into your past. What are your first memories? Walking? Speaking? Seeing your mother’s face?
You are a thinking adult human, but looking back now, when did this change happen? When did you gain consciousness and start creating memories? Or, when did you develop a complete grasp of language? Hard to pinpoint, isn’t it?
Yet, we know you learned language skills because you are tangible evidence.
Now, think about human history, not just your own. Try to find the point in human history that marks the fluid integration of culture, technology, and biology? Locating a single point of synthesis is impossible, like chasing that golden instant when life first sparked on Earth. When did humans, culture, and technology become inseparable?
The moment is behind us, in the past. However, identifying the precise moment is like trying to remember when you first became conscious.
Embrace Your Cyborg
We are cyborg, inextricably bound to culture and technology. While we can’t pinpoint the defining event (stone wedges, wheels, Turing’s Machine, the first electronic computer, etc.), we can be absolutely sure that it is past.
At some point in human evolution, human biology, culture, and technology became a massive cyborg entity, evolving with a speed that would drop Darwin’s jaw. Cultural evolution is like biological adaptations on warp drive.
And, I am trying to define our era in history as it is happening, rather than in retrospect. We can proactively decide what the future will be, the first humans to consciously control adaptations in cultural evolution. Remarkable.
We are interconnected, and our health depends on each facet of our lives:
The digital in culture is analogous to the human brain that organizes thinking and action, or the soul housed in the body (if you are so inclined). If you are still waiting for unification of humans and technology, you are a dinosaur. Many people are like the Catholics who abused Galileo for the heresy of de-centering our universe. They see science and technology as threatening their world view.
Superpowers: Meta-History and Controlled Digital Evolution
We can guide digital evolution with vision and foresight, or we can passively allow negative adaptations that prohibit progress and prosperity. Empathy must be the victor in this fight to adapt. Our culture is on a digital battlefield where individuals and groups have agendas in sculpting and altering human cultural evolution. Empathy is our highest evolved faculty, and if we can enhance and adapt this power the world will be remarkable.
Meta-history is thinking about how we think about the past. History happens in the present. This knowledge gives us planning and adaptation power. Our cyborg powers, knowledge of evolution, and history empowers us as no other humans throughout history.
If we know that we are creating history and that we can control, to a certain extent, cultural evolution, the potential good is boundless
