Mines the 20 years of responses she received from students at the start of the school year to the question: What advice would you give me on how to be the best instructor?
Notes that the students were asked to consider moments when they had felt the most competent and what teachers did that made this possible. Responses over the years from all demographics yielded the same data, that little things are what matter the most in teaching. The students want:
The needs they seek are small in the overall scheme of the classroom, but they are supremely important to each individual student. Powerful teaching requires individual caring and engagement.
