It's tough finding a gratitude quote that is not overly cliche or cheesy, isn't it? Well, I was delighted to find these, both of which are from non-Christian contexts. I grew tired of the regurgitated gratitude quotes over Thanksgiving, my mind as stuffed as my belly. I longed for a more subtle approach to the issue than the too often repeated "an attitude of gratitude."
Bertrand Russell was a philosopher and atheist, and one of the best thinkers of the last century. He is critical but caring and thoughtful. He weighs the troubles and pleasures of humanity. His phrasing is elegant, with the image of the hanging question mark left planted in your mind. What have you taken for granted ?
The Chinese Proverb contains the same simple idea, captured in a brief and powerful story, memorable for its imagery. While enjoying anything, remember who sacrificed to make that moment enjoyable for you. Critically think about what you value and to whom you owe gratitude. Express your gratitude through actions when possible, instead of just words. Pointing your day in the direction of gratitude will fill you with happiness and hope.
