The Art and Value of Good Listening

Mines the power women acquire by being attentive and active listeners rather than passively hearing or constantly speaking. Although geared to women, the advice is helpful for all.
Notes that the first step is to be respectful when listening to others, especially those above and below the individual in the corporate hierarchy. Being respectful means that you are open to what is being said, body gestures indicating attention, verbal responses indicating that you value the other.
One should generally listen more than speak, which suggests to the speaker that what is said has importance and he or she is free to express ideas clearly and thoroughly without being cut off.
If the listener does not open herself to change and ideas, then communication is futile. So, the listener must be willing to question previously held assumptions, biases, and opinions. This does not mean always giving in to demands, but it does suggest that bending is always a possibility.
Speakers seeking your ear will sense receptivity and openness to change and new ideas, facilitating further communication and altering the atmosphere of the organization.
